To celebrate the release of her self-titled new album, Demi Lovato stopped by MTV today to answer some questions from her fans in an exclusive live stream. We've picked out the most exciting parts of the 30-minute interview below; head here to watch the full thing!
Why she named the new album Demi:
"There are a lot of people out there who don't know who I am because they didn't watch X-Factor or Disney Channel... This is the first time that some people are going to be seeing me, and I wanted them to really get to know who I am. Let them know, you might not know who I am, but now you do. Now you do. I'm going to tell you!"
On making her directorial debut with the video for "Made In the USA":
"I had a lot of fun, and I think I found a new passion. I always wanted to do it when I was younger, then I just had the opportunity this time, and I was like, oh my god, I have to take advantage of this."
Why she chose to collaborate with Cher Lloyd on "Really Don't Care":
"My mom loves Cher Lloyd, and my little sister loves Cher Lloyd, so they were like please, please do it. And I love her too. I think she has so much sass and attitude. They were really wanting me to do a duet with her. So I was thinking, who else would be more fun to do a collaboration with than a powerful, sassy attitude-filled girl? There's just nobody else out there. She fit perfectly on that song."
On writing music based on her own life:
"You never want the person you wrote about to hear that song and feel bad. I never want that to happen. But at the same time, it's coming from personal experiences. Then it turns out to be a great song, you're like, 'Sorry!' There are songs that are more personal that bring up more experiences. Specifically, 'Shouldn't Come Back' I was just sobbing. It was built up emotion that I was finally able to release in music."
Her girl crush:
"I think Amber Heard is stunning, and she rolls that way, so it's like, 'Hey!'"
Why she never performs "For the Love of a Daughter" live:
"To be in front of an audience and be that vulnerable, I don't know if I can do it. I never perform it live because it is so emotional. But I may have to. I may have to get over it and realize that I let the world in on this certain topic. And, here we go!"
Where she's at emotionally today:
"I'm grateful for everything. Grateful for the chair that I'm sitting on. The smile on your faces... I'm thankful for everything, but I'm also at a place where I'm in acceptance of everything single heartbreak that I've had. I hold no resentments towards anyone -- even towards the people that inspired the really emotional songs. I'm over it, and now I just want to share my experience with people."
Her longtime friendship with Selena Gomez:
"It's so awesome to see her come so far. We've been through a lot together. We've had periods of time where we grew apart, and we just didn't really talk. Now we're in a place where I think we realize that life is so short, and that when you have people in your life that love you so much, then you should just always be around them. She's going to be a big sister, and like I want to be around for that. She has a great soul. She's talented. She's beautiful. She will always be really, really close to my heart."
