The Summer Set took a break from their sold out 'Wake Up and Be Awesome Tour' to hang out with J-14 and talk about their new album 'Legendary' out April 16th!
J-14: Your third album is called 'Legendary'. How did you come up with the title?
Brian Dales: It's the last song on the record and it was one of the first songs that was written. I think it was the song that inspired and led to all the other ones being written. There's a lyric in the song that's "we all want to be legendary to somebody" and I think that's kinda the most important thesis to the record for me and I think the record's about trying to inspire everyone to be the best person they can and there's something or someone out there for everyone. For me, I think 'Legendary' was a pretty immediate choice for album title. The life experience I think was the biggest inspiration. I think when the song was written we stopped trying to force the record in any specific direction and kinda felt like it started happening a lot more naturally.
J-14: What is your current single "Boomerang" all about?
Brian: It's in a lighthearted sense a song about a guy promising a girl all the most outlandish things he could think of to kind of solidify that he's not going anywhere. "Boomerang" is a song about never giving up on someone that you care about.
J-14: What was the writing process like for the new album?
Brian:The most important part of the entire experience was the fact that for the first time we got to make a record slowly and one song at a time and be able to make a batch of songs and then go on tour, then come back and see what was working and what wasn't and being able to work one song at a time instead of going in and banging out 12 songs in three and a half weeks and being like well that's it.
Josh Montgomery: Truthfully the hardest part a band or artist has when facing a new album is where to go, what to do, what are we feeling, what are we thinking and having an actual organic like change of heart and change of thought as an entire group of people, as an entire band. That's the most important part. So Brian writing "Legendary" set the precedent for the entire record, then him and John are cranking out songs at an exponential rate.
J-14: How would you say your sound has evolved throughout the years?
John:) I say we're kind of refining it constantly. We were super young when we started. 'Love Like This' came out that, momentum of just getting signed, being excited and then 'Everything's Fine' was kind of the teenage awkward years. Now we kinda figured out who we are a little more.
J-14: Do you have a favorite song off the new album?
Brian:We always kind of joke about our favorite songs changing every single day so I think my answer is my favorite song is the 12 out of 50 that actually made the record.
Jess Bowen:It changes every day for everyone I feel like. Like Brian said it's just 12 awesome songs out of the 50 they wrote it's hard to pick a favorite.
Josh:When you have your own record stuck in your head all the time but in a good way, not a frustrating this is stuck in my head and driving my nuts but like I have perpetually had one of our songs stuck in my head throughout this whole process.
