J-14 Video: Lennon and Maisy Sing 'Happy Birthday' to Harry Styles

lennon-and-maisy-sing-happy-birthday-harry-styles.jpg

A year ago, Lennon and Maisy Stella were just two normal sisters who loved to sing -- until their homemade cover of "Call Your Girlfriend" went viral in May. Soon they were getting calls from everyone from the band OK Go to actress Amy Poehler. But the girls ultimately went Hollywood and are now regulars on the ABC drama series, 'Nashville.'

But just because they've gone from regular kids to TV stars so quickly doesn't mean they're not just like you. In fact, 13-year-old Lennon and 9-year-old Maisy are such One Direction fans that they made a birthday video just for Harry Styles' 19th birthday on February 1.

And lucky for Lennon and Maisy, Harry Styles is already a fan of theirs too! Just this Monday, he posted on Twitter: "Cannot get over how good @lennonandmaisy's voices are.. So nice. If you haven't heard them already, you should .x"

One Direction's youngest member is ringing in his final year as a teen today, as Harry Styles turns 19 years old! In the wee hours of the night, he Tweeted, "I feel olllllllllllldddddddddddd," dragging out the letters in the style of his bandmate Liam Payne's Tweets.

Join J-14 Magazine in wishing Harry Styles a very happy birthday today, February 1.

Fun Facts about Harry Styles:
- Harry isn't just the youngest member of One Direction, he's also the youngest in his family. "I'm the baby of the family -- I'm still in napkins!" he joked to J-14 the first time we met him. He has an older sister named Gemma.
- Harry revealed two of his pre-One Direction jobs to J-14. "I used to be a baker. I worked in a bakery," he told J-14. "And I used to have a paper route." (Imagine have Hazza deliver your newspaper every morning!)
- He's all about laughter in a relationship. Harry tells J-14, "I really like girls who are funny and can make me laugh with a good sense of humor -- and are nice!"

Before-You-Exit-Tour-Diary-1.jpg

This winter, pop brother trio Before You Exit is hitting the road on Action Item's The Resolution Tour and J-14 is giving you a sneak peak in to the lives of the boys while they keep us up to date in their exclusive tour diaries from the road! Check out the second tour diary below from Connor McDonough.

The Resolution Tour has been a blast over the past weeks. Never did we think we could get to be such good friends with all of the other talented bands on this tour. Philly was a blast and a highlight moment was definitely playing at Q102 where we played an acoustic performance, did a question and answer session, and we were also greeted by a ton of fans which was amazing. Here's a shot we took with fans outside! [above]

After Philly we moved through Washington DC and North Carolina, both of which were really great shows. Florida was the next stop and was definitely one our entire band and crew was looking forward to being that's where we're from. Besides everyone picking up a little sickness, it was no doubt the best feeling to be home and playing shows. One of our favorite parts of the day has definitely been playing the VIP performance where we play a few acoustic songs and then sign afterwards before the show starts.

One of the mornings before load in we walked around Tampa a little bit to find a hula-hoop station where Riley found the inspiration to pick up a couple Hula-Hoop and show off his skills. Check out this picture [below].

Orlando was an amazing show and definitely one for the books. The crowd was electric and it was great to see friends and family while home. Here's a shot of us leaving the bus before the show [below].

Thanks for reading! More entries soon to come!

Max Schneider is known for putting together mash-ups with Victoria Justice and covering some of the most popular songs on the radio, all while starring as Zander in Nickelodeon's "How To Rock" -- no big deal!

Now he's starting off 2013 with a solo cover of Justin Timberlake's "Suit & Tie," and he definitely doesn't disappoint! Max stays true to the song by putting on his suit and tie and really channeling JT. (P.S. Don't you just love how he incorporates Taylor Swift's "Trouble, Trouble, Trouble" into the song?!)

"Justin Timberlake's my idol and what better way to kick [2013] off than by honoring him and his music," Max says.

Jessica-Ashley.jpg

J-14 is scouting out the hottest music around... and this week's pick is Jessica Ashley.

Here are four things you need to know about Jessica Ashley whose debut EP Prelude is out now!

1. Though she's been playing classical piano since she was four, like Justin Bieber and Austin Mahone, 20-year-old Jessica Ashley used YouTube as an outlet to cover some of her favorite songs. "I love to cover so many songs, but one of my favorite's is 'Perfect' by Pink!" Jessica tells J-14.

2. The best way Ashley would describe her sound is pop and R&B infused with other genres she's inspired by including classical and jazz. "I feel like I bring a fresh and new approach to the sound in the way that I arrange my music and co-produce it. I really try to tell the story in my lyrics, in an honest way," she says.

3. Her debut EP Prelude is all about introducing herself as an artist. "It was all about showcasing the components that make up who I am. Whether on a ballad, or an uptempo, in making this EP, it was important to me that my fans get a grasp on the person that I am," she tells J-14. "It was all about revealing my true self. My honest self."

4. Jessica recently released her latest music video for a track called "Neverland", all about finding hope and serenity. "The song describes the feeling of longing for a place that is free of judgement, and hate. In the world we live in, I think that most people are on a search for this daily," Jessica tells J-14. "I believe, we all can relate to it in one way or another."

Check out Jessica Ashley's music video for "Neverland" below and let us know what you think!

J-14 Editor Picks: Best Super Bowl 2013 Moments

Super-Bowl-2013-Ravens-Quarterback.jpg

The J-14 Magazine editors can get sporty too -- especially when it comes to the Super Bowl extravaganza every year. Here are our favorite moments from the San Francisco 49ers vs. Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl game yesterday that the Ravens won 34-31...

"Even though I was rooting for the 49ers, my jaw dropped when the Ravens' Jacoby Jones ran for a record-tying 108-yard touchdown in the beginning of the third quarter. I love watching history being made!" --Assistant Editor Laura Knipping

"The 35-minute blackout made this a Super Bowl to remember. The best part was being on social media during that time and seeing all the crazy Tweets. One of my favorites was Ryan Seacrest's 'Anyone have a charger?' Oh... and the Tide commercial with Joe Montana's stain might be the first time a commercial made me laugh out loud." --Editor-in-Chief Rachel Chang

"I loved the Taco Bell commercial with the senior citizens living like they were young again to a Spanish version of 'We Are Young.' So cute!" --Photo Editor Nicole Mazza

"I actually started screaming in my living room when Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams popped out on stage to join Beyoncé! The Destiny's Child reunion was definitely my favorite part, although I loved Beyoncé's entire performance!" --Intern Sora Hwang

"Even though I'm not a fan of the Ravens, the 108-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Jacoby Jones was pretty exciting. Beyoncé's angry face during the halftime show was a close second." --Designer Tanya Swartz

"I loved the Budweiser Clydesdale commercial -- such a tearjerker! And now I really want a horse." --Deputy Editor Ashley Spencer

"My favorite Super Bowl moment was of course when Beyoncé and Destiny's Child performed! I've been a fan since I was really young and so happy they're back -- it was such a great surprise. I also loved when the power went out that was hilarious and definitely made the night memorable. Football-wise, when Jacoby Jones from the Ravens scored a touchdown and did his little dance, it was so funny!" --Intern Lindsey Smith

"I love the Oreo whisper fight in the library commercial. Who knew Oreos could create such a quiet riot!" --Photo Editor Danielle Kepler

Megan&Liz-talk-new-music.jpg

With almost one million YouTube subscribers, over 200 million video views (and counting!), and a Macy's commercial, there's no sign of stopping Megan & Liz! We sat down with the 20-year-old twins to discuss their new 'Bad For Me' EP and what's next for them!

J-14: Tell us about your new EP.

Megan: It's called 'The Bad For Me' EP and it has six brand new songs, seven songs including "Bad for Me." They're all very special to us because they all have a very specific story behind them.

J-14: Which song is your favorite?

Megan: I think both of ours is the same. It's a song called "Like I Would."
Liz: It's country.
Megan: I'm really happy with the way it came out and it's a different sound and I really like it.

J-14: What's the song writing process like for you?

Liz: It's different every time!
Megan: We'll sit down and bang out a song in like 20 minutes and sometimes it takes eight hours. We like to refer back to specific events and make sure that it makes sense for other people to listen to it and be like "Oh, I can relate to that." Because I know when I'm listening to music if the song is like me word for word I'm like "This is my new favorite song!"

J-14: How has your music evolved since your first single?

Megan:
I feel that just as people and as musicians we've grown so much, learning what we like in music and what we don't and working with different people. Learning how to say what we want to say. I feel like we've learned a lot, but I still feel like there's so much to learn. So we're at a cool point right now.

J-14: What's next for you?

Megan & Liz: Well, we're touring in early 2013. Forty-five dates -- they're going to be announced very soon. And we're really excited about that. We're working on our first full-length album, which will be out in February or March of 2013!

Are you a fan of Megan & Liz?

J-14 Editor Blog: Aaron Carter is 'Fantastick'

Aaron-Carter-Ashley-Spencer-Rachel-Chang-J14-Fantasticks.jpg
Aaron Carter with J-14 Editors Ashley (left) and Rachel (right).

Hi J-14ers!

Let me preface this by saying that when I was 12 years old, Aaron Carter was my friends' and my Justin Bieber. Every carpool home was filled with the sounds of "Aaron's Party (Come Get It)" and "That's How I Beat Shaq." We trekked to the concerts, bought the t-shirts, and plastered our rooms with his posters. Time went on, and I eventually transitioned to other musical tastes and left my teen idol worship days behind (well, until I became a J-14 editor!).

But last weekend, all my excitement over Aaron Carter came rushing back when we had the chance to take in one of his final performances in the off-Broadway musical, 'The Fantasticks.' The show was adorable and fun. I'm a huge fan of musicals, and even though 'The Fantasticks' is the longest running off-Broadway show, I'd somehow never seen it before. Tucked away on the third floor of the tiny Snapple Theater in midtown Manhattan, 'The Fantasticks' turned out to be the perfect cure to a dreary Saturday, and Aaron's stellar performance and post-show meet-and-greet brought back all my fangirl love.

And guess what? Aaron's about to take off on a brand-new national The After Party Tour, so you have the chance to see him live too. Click here for dates and ticket info -- maybe I'll see you there!

Ashley Spencer
J-14 Deputy Editor

Hi there J-14ers!

I'm a huge musical theater fan -- I've trekked out to the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ, to see 'Newsies' and 'The Sound of Music,' hopped across the pond for 'Jersey Boys' in London, seen 'Les Miserables' in San Francisco and 'Rent' in Los Angeles, and of course, caught Broadway shows here in New York from new musicals like 'Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark' and 'American Idiot: The Musical' to old favorites like 'Annie' and 'Little Shop of Horrors.'

So when I heard that 'The Fantasticks' is the longest-running musical... and I hadn't ever seen it, of course I had to catch it. And on top of that, J-14's longtime pal Aaron Carter was starring in it as the lovestruck Matt.

Aaron has been more than 450 performances of the show since November 2011, and when we caught the matinee last Saturday, it was clear he was an old pro at the role. The intimate theater gave us a close-up look at his singing and acting -- and he stepped right into the role of musical theater star perfectly in songs like "Soon It's Gonna Rain" and "This Plum Is Too Ripe."

And after the show, Aaron stuck around to make sure he hung out with each and every fan -- and chatted with us about how excited he is about heading back out on the road for his 32-city tour 'The After Party,' where he'll play all of his classic songs like "Aaron's Party," "I Want Candy," and "That's How I Beat Shaq."

So if you're in the New York City area, definitely be sure to catch Aaron in his final performances of 'The Fantasticks'... and every one can get ready to join in on 'The After Party' starting February 22 in Poughkeepsie, NY.

What do you guys think of Aaron Carter?

Can't wait to hear from you!

J-14 Exclusive: Khloé Kardashian Talks Body Drama and One Direction

Khloe-Kardashian-Generation-Know.jpg

By Ashley Spencer

On 'Keeping Up With the Kardashians,' Khloé Kardashian is fierce, funny, and above all, real. And as J-14 learned firsthand when we caught up with her at The London New York on February 1, Khloé's down-to-earth persona is definitely not an act put on for the reality TV cameras. This girl is as genuine and open as they come.

Working with U By Kotex's Generation Know campaign, Khloé is currently on a mission to promote an open dialogue for young women to talk comfortably about their health and get real answers. We got her to spill on everything from her advice for her little sisters to her embarrassing body stories to which One Direction guy she calls an "angel."

J-14: This is your third year partnering with U By Kotex, and the first year working on their new Generation Know campaign. What's been the most exciting part for you?

Khloé Kardashian: I've always been all about empowerment, confidence, and owning who you are. I learned a lot from being bullied growing up. Generation Know is a website to really just start the conversation about your body, health, embracing who you are, busting myths. Sometimes girls you know can be catty if you ask them body questions, but Generation Know is a forum where you can go and have these conversations and ask anything you want. No one's there to judge you and you get the answers.

J-14: Another problem is when teens' friends tell them information that they just heard from their sibling or other friends -- and it's totally false.

Khloé: Yeah! My little sisters [Kendall and Kylie Jenner] even said to me once when I was telling them about different forms of panty liners and pads and tampons, 'Oh, well you can't use a tampon unless you've had sex, right? Because it will make you not a virgin anymore.' And I was like, 'Who told you that?' and they were like, 'The girls in school told us that.' I was like, 'No!'

J-14: Did you ever believe a health rumor that was just way off?

Khloé: My sister once told me that if you're having a heavy period flow, you should sleep on your side because it will decrease it or even stop it -- and I believed that for a long time! If I was on my cycle, I would always sleep on my side and then I heard the truth, 'If you're on your heavy flow, then you're on your heavy flow [no matter what you do].' I never want Kylie and Kendall to think that I'm too cool for them to ask me anything. That's part of way I signed on with U By Kotex -- I really believe in it.

J-14: It's such an empowering campaign! On another exciting note, you spent some time with the One Direction guys when they performed on 'The X Factor USA.' Are you a fan?

Khloé: They're the sweetest. They're so down to earth and just really easy breezy. There are so many screaming girls going crazy for them -- tears, everything -- and they're just so calm and cool. I'm close to Niall [Horan], and he's an angel. We stay in touch. We talk.

J-14: So, if you had to set up Kylie and Kendall with members of One Direction, who would you pick for them to date?

Khloé: I guess I would have to know the guys' personalities a bit more to decide. Kendall's very quiet and shy and Kylie's so outgoing...

J-14: So maybe Kendall needs someone loud like Niall and Kylie would go for a more reserved guy like Liam Payne? Opposites attract!

Khloé: Maybe! You know, I don't know -- Kylie might overrun Liam because she's [feisty] like me. She's a little mini me and I love it.

In the Valentine's Day drama 'Beautiful Creatures,' Alden Ehrenreich plays the adorably charming and ultra romantic Ethan Wate... and in real-life, Alden is quite a romantic himself.

When J-14 Magazine caught up with him backstage at the New York Comic Con, he shared his favorite memory from when he was 14 years old in J-14's exclusive video series, "When I Was 14..." -- where he gushes over his first real girlfriend and reveals the most romantic thing he's done for her (which sounds like romantic comedy material!).

Hey J-14ers!

It's that time of year again - time to clean out your closet and head over to your local Aéropostale store with a pair of gently used jeans.

DoSomething.org and Aéropostale have teamed up for its sixth annual Teens for Jeans campaign. Last year, Teens for Jeans collected over 1 million pairs of jeans through Aéropostale and with the help of jean drives at over 12,000 schools. Help Teens for Jeans reach their amazing goal of 1.5 million pairs of jeans and 20,000 participating schools.

Can you believe that over 1.7 million homeless youth in our country are under the age of 18? And, the thing they ask for the most is just a pair of jeans, so start your own drive at school or take some old jeans to your Aéro store by Feb. 10.

By starting a drive, you can do good and feel good while receiving a 25% coupon for every person who participates. Good deeds and shopping discounts sounds like the perfect combination to me, but it gets even better. The school with the largest jean drive will win $10,000, Aéropostale school spirit sweatshirts for everyone, and a pizza party!

So do your part and look in your closet for those jeans you bought last year but stopped wearing, and get to that Aéro store to help out someone your age in need.

Chloë Grace Moretz (who's teamed up with Aéopostale) said it best: "They're just ordinary kids living extraordinarily difficult lives, but you can make a difference." Check out her PSA below:

For more information on how you can help, visit TeensforJeans.com or text 'Jeans' to 38383. And stay tuned to J14.com for your chance to win jeans signed by Ryan Beatty and Cher Lloyd!

J-14 Exclusive: Brandon Soo Hoo Talks 'Ender's Game'

$

Brandon-Soo-Hoo-talks-enders-game.jpg

At just 17 years old, Brandon Soo Hoo has worked with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Ben Stiller, Harrison Ford and Abigial Breslin. Most recently, he's been involved in 'Incredible Crew,' a comedy show produced by Nick Cannon, and will be hitting the big screen in November in the sci-fi flick 'Ender's Game.' We got a chance to chat with Brandon about his experience working on the movie and with Abigail Breslin, Asa Butterfield, and Hailee Steinfeld.

J-14: How would you describe your character in 'Ender's Game?' How are you like him? How are you different than him?

Brandon Soo Hoo: My character, Fly Molo, is a veteran soldier in Battle School. At first, he is introduced as Bonzo's lackey, but he eventually comes to recognize Ender as the superior commander. I can definitely relate to Fly's second-in-command role. A leader will always feel the majority of the pressure in a high-stakes situation, whereas the lieutenant is usually allowed to function below the radar. However, I'd say that unlike Fly, I would have a bit of trouble putting up with Bonzo. I have mild authority issues.

J-14: What was the most challenging scene for you to film? Why?

Brandon: The most difficult to film was probably the zero grav close up shots. Core body strength is the key to appearing weightless and I don't think I had enough of it. Imagine flexing every inch of your body for five-minute intervals while wearing several layers of motorcycles attire. Now, rep that around twenty times. Now put a camera on your face, say some lines, and try not to look like you're dying.

J-14: What drew you to this movie?

Brandon: When I was 11, my teacher gave me my own copy of 'Ender's Game' (thanks, Laura). It is still among my top five favorite books of all time. It's funny because when I was reading the book, I was thinking, "If this book is ever made into film, I hope I can work in it." I was thinking Han Tzu, but Fly Molo works too!

J-14: What was your first impression of Abigail Breslin, Asa Butterfield, and Hailee Steinfeld?

Brandon: All three of them were quite charming individuals in their own ways. My first impression of Abby (Abigail) was that she was outgoing, witty, and easy to get along with right off the bat. I remember Hailee to be one of the most composed, sophisticated young women I've spoken to. When I met Asa, he seemed like the shy-brooding type, complete with flowy hair and teenage angst. But upon getting to know him better, I now recognize him as the hilarious, British, electro music fanatic that he is.

J-14: Give us three reasons why all J-14 readers should go see 'Ender's Game.'

Brandon: Because it's going to be a classic, guaranteed. It's an epic sci-fi novel, converted into an equally epic film. Plus: aliens, laser guns, and a racially diverse cast. What more can you ask for?

Have you read 'Ender's Game' and are you excited for the movie?

Cody-pastry-shoot-1.jpg

J-14 Magazine and Pastry teamed up to give one fan the ultimate Cody Simpson experience -- and all expenses paid trip to Santa Monica, CA, to hang out with Cody as he did a photo shoot for the spring campaign for Pastry Shoes! Winner Sydney tells us all about her experience below.

Last month, I won a trip from J-14 Magazine to go to the Pastry photo shoot in California. While I was there I met Alli and Cody Simpson, Jessica Jarrell, Cleopatra, Madison Pettis, Colette Carr, Vanessa and Angela Simmons.

The first night I was there, I went to the desert in Joshua tree to see the end of the first day of their shoot. I met Alli Simpson, Colette Carr, Cleopatra, Madison Pettis, Vanessa and Angela Simmons. The next day, we went back down to Joshua tree to finish up the shoot. The desert was so pretty. There was sand everywhere and some Joshua trees. It was like nowhere I had ever been. When we got there, I watched Alli, Colette, and Cleopatra's photo shoots. Then, the Pastry team surprised me and said it was my turn to be photographed. I couldn't believe I was going to be part of the photo shoot. They put me in hair, makeup, and wardrobe and they took my pictures. I loved the shoes I got to wear, the Purple Sires and Dutchess Pie Sneaker wedges! I was so glad I got to keep them! Afterward, I did group pictures with Collette, Alli, Jessica, and Cleopatra! Everyone there was really nice. It was so cool to hang out with the Pastry girls.

The next day we went to L.A. and stayed at the Andaz Hotel which was really cool. The Pastry team showed me around Los Angeles, the Hollywood Sign, and took me shopping at the Beverly Center. We also went to Santa Monica and went to the pier. It is so pretty. It was the first time I had seen the Pacific Ocean! I checked out a lot of shops and restaurants. There also was a man who did tricks with parrots.

For the next two days we were in San Diego. We went to the San Diego Zoo, walked around Balboa Park, shopped and went to a few museums. We also went ice skating by the beach and I finally got to touch the Pacific Ocean. My last day was back in Santa Monica for the photo shoot with Cody Simpson! I had been looking forward to it my whole trip! I made sure to wear the Dutchess Pie Pastry sneaker wedges when I met him because he is so tall! I was so excited to meet him! He was incredibly nice and sweet. The photo shoot was really fun and it was so awesome to meet him.

Overall it was a really fun and amazing trip that I will never forget. Thank you to the entire Pastry team and J-14 Magazine for making this possible.

You might know Kat McNamara from 'Kickin' It' or 'Girl vs. Monster,' (she's also teaming up with BFF Joel Courtney in 'Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn' out later this year!) but what you might not know is that she's also a proud Girl Scout!

She stopped by the J-14 office to talk all about her Girl Scout experiences and to celebrate National Girl Scout Cookie Day, February 8th!

Here are Kat's top 5 reasons why being a Girl Scout is so amazing:

1. It Shows You Hard Work Pays Off
"It gives you a work ethic because there's so many things that you do," Kat says. "You work hard to accomplish goals, so it teaches you that if you put your mind to something you can accomplish it."

2. You Make Lifelong Friends
From slumber parties to volunteering together, your fellow Girl Scouts become a part of your family. "I can turn to any one of those girls, with any problem, and they would have my back," she says.

3. It's the Largest Girl-Run Business
The Girl Scouts have been around for 101 years and their cookie selling skills have only gotten better! This year they're stressing the 5 main lessons their cookie sales promote: "goal setting, decision making, money management, business ethics, and personal skills," Kat says.

4. You Can Learn and Have Fun at the Same Time
Girl Scout cookies are so good and the troops who sell them always have the best time, but "it's a real learning experience and that's something that's really important to Girl Scouts and it's a key aspect of what we do," Kat says.

5. You Can Try New Things
Whether you are naturally adventurous or not, the Girl Scouts encourage you to not be afraid to try new things! "If you're someone shy and you're not sure about what you want to do or haven't tried a lot of different things," said Kat "the Girl Scouts is a great way to have new experiences and make memories."
