Before-You-Exit-Resolution-Tour.jpg

This winter, pop brother trio Before You Exit is hitting the road on Action Item's The Resolution Tour and J-14 is giving you a sneak peak in to the lives of the boys while they keep us up to date in their exclusive tour diaries from the road! Check out the first tour diary below from vocalist Riley McDonough.

On the first of the New Year marked the day that we headed off on the road from Orlando to Boston to start the Resolution Tour! We were headed to Boston but we made a pit stop in Nashville to pick up the bus along the way. After settling in, we were geared up for the tour. It had been a little while since we played a show and after weeks of practicing, we were all excited and nervous for the shows to come.

January 4th. The first day of tour, and the release date of our new single 'I Like That'! We were overwhelmed by the positive feedback and reactions to our new song. This, along with the start of the tour led to a very exciting day in the Before You Exit camp. After getting to the venue, it was really awesome getting to talk to all the bands, some of which we were meeting for the first time. The first show was a lot of figuring out technical issues, but after working through them the show was fantastic. We got to play 'I Like That' for the first time, and even though we had just released it earlier that day, some fans already knew all of the words! It was amazing that the show sold out and we got to meet so many fans. It was great being able to see so many new and familiar faces.

J-14 Exclusive: Selena Gomez Sings Boy Trouble Songs at UNICEF Concert

selena-gomez-unicef-concert.jpg

Selena Gomez kicked off her UNICEF concert at the Best Buy Theater in New York City last night by saying it was her first time performing in more than a year -- but J-14 Magazine was there front and center and watched her take the stage like a pro. Not only did she rock out to her trademark songs like "Round and Round" and "Love You Like a Love Song," but she used her comeback concert to sing some carefully selected cover songs... perhaps hinting at her emotional breakup with almost two-year on- and off-again boyfriend Justin Bieber.

"I'm excited for you guys to have this next year with me and hear everything and see everything that I've been going through," Selena told the sold-out crowd that included movie star Ben Stiller.

Selena introduced one of the covers by saying, "It's by my best friend in the entire world and if anybody has felt anything painful to their heart, they know who this girl is. Sing along if you know it." And she burst into a heartfelt rendition of Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble," that she ended with a sly little giggle.

She then got even sassier and fiester by telling the audience that the last couple of months have been difficult for her and that she'd been "sad" before diving into Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me A River" with more passion than we'd ever seen her sing with before. Not only did she avoid saying the word "Justin" by introducing it as an "*NSYNC J.T." song, but she ended it with she same sly little giggle she did Taylor Swift's song.

Selena followed up her boy trouble cover songs with Britney Spears' "...Baby One More Time."

Stay tuned to J-14 Magazine for more videos and photos from the big concert last night.

High-Valley.jpg

1. Canada's pop-country trio High Valley consists of Bryan, Brad and Curtis, who are all brothers! "Our mom and dad and three older sisters always sang and played guitars, so as a result we grew up singing and playing together as a family," the youngest brother Curtis tells J-14. "Country music was always played in our home so we naturally fell in love with it and started playing together as brothers."

2. The band's name was created by Brad when he was only five-years old! "He would play around and DJ a fake radio show on an old cassette tape recorder and the band was always called High Valley," Curtis says. "So when we started playing together, the name High Valley just made sense."

3. Their latest album 'Love Is A Long Road' includes something that anyone can relate to. "The album is basically about the three of us as brothers and what we believe in, from working hard, to unconditional love, to family values, as well as our faith," Curtis tells J-14. "It's important to us to represent positive lyrics the entire family can enjoy!"

4. High Valley's latest single "Love You For A Long Time" is a straight forward love song. "It basically compares a man's love for a woman to things that will last forever. 'Long as roosters crow at sunrise.' 'Long as there's preaching at the church house.' The song at its core is about unconditional and unending love," Curtis says.

To celebrate his sixth year of posting videos on YouTube, Justin Bieber uploaded a sneak peek of one of the songs on his upcoming album, 'Believe Acoustic.' The video is a raw performance of Justin singing, "Take You," which he calls one of his favorite songs.

There are eight acoustic covers from last year's 'Believe,' along with two brand new songs on the upcoming album 'Believe Acoustic' in stores January 29!

"It has been 6 years since I started this YouTube channel and in those years you have all taken a small town kid from Canada who didn't even know dreams were possible and let me live a life that I am forever grateful for," Justin says in the description of the video. "I promise that as long as you are there for me I will always try to do better and to keep going. Thank you for the last 6 years and look for many more to come." He finished off his words of gratitude with #alwaysKidrauhl, the YouTube username that has been with him since day one.

J-14 Exclusive: Blake Michael Talks 'Dog With a Blog'

Blake-Michael-q-and-a.jpg

You might remember Blake Michael as the shy drummer skipping soccer practice in 'Lemonade Mouth,' but now he's the suave Tyler James on Disney Channel's 'Dog with a Blog.' On the show, Tyler's family is dealing with more than the typical issues that arise when you have stepsiblings. They have a talking dog -- who has his own blog! We caught up with Blake on the perks of being part of the Disney Channel family, hilarious backstage pranks, and what you can look forward to on the show.

J-14: How did you get involved with 'Dog with a Blog?'

Blake Michael:
I've done a movie called 'Lemonade Mouth' for Disney Channel, which was fun to do. I actually got discovered through an open casting call where anyone could audition. From there, I kind of entered the whole Disney Channel family and they gave me some great opportunities. I auditioned for a ton of stuff and 'Dog with a Blog' was just the right fit for me.

J-14: What's it like on set? Are there any funny stories from behind the scenes?

Blake: Well, me and the girls, G. Hannelius and Francesca Capaldi, we have so much fun on and off set. We have such crazy stuff that goes on. We prank people on set. We'll wear stick-on mustaches sometimes just randomly. Or I'll talk in an accent the entire day, even when we rehearse. Everyone's family here and we play a lot of pranks on each other and joke around all the time.

J-14: Who is the easiest to prank and who is the one who comes up with the best ones?

Blake:
Well, I can tell you that the easiest person to prank on set is our schoolteacher. Her name is Fayna. Actually, me and G. did this ongoing prank -- I never told anyone about this yet. I dipped my hand in a cup of water and then I used my fingers to make it seem like I was sneezing on someone, so I splattered the water on the back of their neck. G. discreetly filmed and I did that to a ton of people. We did it to our set teacher and we did it over and over and over and [at first] she didn't realize that it was a prank. She thought that I was actually sick. We have this all on video and she got really mad when she realized it was a joke.

J-14: Is there something coming up on the show that you're really excited for everyone to see?

Blake: Well, there's actually an episode coming up that you'll see somewhere in the beginning of the new year and you find out a very interesting and surprising secret about my character, Tyler. I'm sure it'll shock everybody and it changes everything, so the viewers definitely won't see it coming.

J-14: If you could give our readers, who maybe aren't watching yet, three reasons to watch the show, what would they be?

Blake: Watch 'Dog with a Blog' to get a good laugh, to see me, of course, and to see an awesome, awesome talking dog who is the cleverest, most awesome dude in the world. He's really, really adorable and cute and it's really cool seeing what kind of tricks he has up his sleeve.

Have you seen Blake Michael in 'Dog With a Blog?'

J-14 Editor Blog: My 'American Idol' Pick: Isabel Gonzalez

American-Idol-Isabel-Gonzales.jpg

Hi there J-14ers!

I'll admit there was a time when I used to drag my friends 2 1/2 hours away in a snowstorm to see an American Idol concert, but the last few years, the show just hasn't had the same kind of spark... until I saw 16-year-old Alpharetta, GA, student Isabel Gonzalez audition in Charlotte, N.C.

Right away, I fell in love with the adorable story of her being too shy to even think to audition, but landing in front of the Idol judges because her aunt Bernie Haberman nominated her. "I nominated Isabel because she has an amazing voice, but she'd be too nervous to go on her own," her aunt said. "But I figured if I give her that little push, she could rise to the occasion and really rise to the top."

And boy were her aunt's instincts right -- Isabel stood out enough for judge Randy Jackson to surprise her at school one day and hand her an audition number. And then she wowed the judges with her take on Sam Cooke's "Nothing Can Change This Love."

From the minute she sang her first note, I was mesmerized -- and apparently so were the judges. "You're doing it so effortlessly -- you're up there and you're not even trying," Nicki Minaj said. And Mariah Carey added, "People are going to fall in with love you because you are a star!"

And for me, I also fell for her effortless chic style right away. At school, she was wearing an adorable polished preppy black-and-white outfit -- and said she was worried about picking the right audition outfit. But she totally nailed it. Her navy patterned overlay dress was one part pretty, one part punky -- and her chunky statement necklace added a pop of classic boldness while her leather shoes gave a punch of rockstar power. (Psst! Isabel, where did you get that dress? I want it!)

And as obsessed as I am with One Direction's Louis Tomlinson's girlfriend Eleanor Calder's style, I think Izzi Gonzalez may give her a run for my top choice for style icon!

Watch Isabel's audition here and let me know what you think of her singing and her style:

Can't wait to hear from you, J-14ers!

J-14 Editor Blog: My 'American Idol' Pick: Lazaro Arbos

american-idol-lazaro-arbos.jpg

Get ready to fall in love with Lazaro Arbos!

As much as American Idol is about good singing, it's also about good stories. And no one has a more winning combination of vocal talent and inspiring spirit than 21-year-old Lazaro.

Ever since he could talk, Lazaro has struggled with an intense stutter, which only grew stronger when his family moved from Cuba to Naples, FL, when he was ten. "The things that normal people would think are so easy become so hard for me," Lazaro says. "We don't know where my stuttering came from. It's just something that goes on and no one really knows why."

Lazaro's stuttering has affected his life so much that he often found himself alone with music as his only comfort. "Since I was small I have always wanted to sing," Lazaro says. "No one wanted to hang out with me at school and I had no friends to go out with so I would be home."

"I think music is his life," his dad, Reinaldo Arbos, adds. "I think without it, he wouldn't know what to do with his life because he loves his music."

When Lazaro walked into the American Idol auditions in Chicago, I didn't know what to expect. Sure, he won me over with his tearjerking story -- but could he sing?

Spoiler Alert! He announced his song choice as "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and as soon as he stopped speaking and started singing, his stutter vanished like magic. Seriously. He sounds like a Nick Jonas-Josh Groban hybrid and I'm convinced he's got the charm, talent, and heart to blow the competition out of the water this season on Idol.

Learn more about Lazaro's story and watch his American Idol audition below!

Do you agree with me? Is Lazaro Arbos the one to beat on this season of American Idol? Sound off in the comments!

Shailene Woodley Talks 'Divergent' Movie Casting

Shailene-woodley-divergent.jpg

When news broke of Shailene Woodley being cast as Tris, the lead role in the upcoming 'Divergent' film, in October, fans couldn't stop asking the same question: "Who will play Four?!" Tobias 'Four' Eaton is Tris's main love interest and training instructor in the book trilogy by Veronica Roth.

The answer is still up in the air, but according to Shailene, the book-turned-movie [reviewed here] leading guy is definitely going to be a man's man!

"The thing about Four is that he has to be a man. No feminine actors, please," 'The Secret Life of an American Teenager' actress told MTV. "You cannot walk in that room in pretty little boots and pretend you're a man. I'm sorry. You need to walk in there, and you need to not have muscles that look good and not actually work. There have been a few guys that have this power about them. It's a natural masculine power that some people have and some people don't. There's nothing good or bad or wrong or right about it. This character needs to be extremely masculine, and his eyes need to scream vulnerability and sensitivity. It's really hard to find in a dude, especially a dude who can act."

As of right now, Lucas Till, Alex Pettyfer, and Jeremy Irvine are reportedly the three main contenders for the role! Check out Miss Literati's book review of Veronica Roth's Divergent.

Who do you think would make the best Four?

Carmen-and-Camille.jpg

J-14 is scouting out the hottest music around... and this week's pick is Carmen & Camille.

Here are four things you need to know about Carmen & Camille whose new EP Neon is out soon!

1. Twin sisters Carmen & Camille have been involved with music their whole lives. "We have always sang in choir and I started playing the flute in elementary school and Camille started on guitar in high school," Carmen tells J-14. "But it wasn't until after high school and college that we started pursuing it full time. We've always had a passion for music. We have a tape recording of the first song we wrote when we were four years old about our Grandma's cat."

2. The electro-pop duo have a list of artists they'd love to work with including Bruno Mars, Maroon 5, and Carly Rae Jepsen. "We know her from Vancouver and are so happy for all of her success. We could do a song about Vancouver girls taking over the world!" Carmen says.

3. Their EP Neon is due out early this year. "Neon was written over the past couple years, the majority of it in LA. It is a snapshot of our lives, songs like 'Big Love' and 'Haunting Me' were written about specific relationships," Carmen tells J-14. "The blessing and the curse of having two people writing and performing the songs is making it personal for both of us. But these songs are definitely personal and bring us back to the amazing, crazy, and sometimes bittersweet moments of the past couple of years."

4. Their favorite track of their EP is a song called "Away". "It changes often. I like 'Away' because it's kind of quirky like us," Carmen says. "I was just going to say the exact same thing. Twin moment," Camille adds.

Disney Channel's 'Boy Meets World' spin-off series has found its star! The new series, 'Girl Meets World,' has cast 11-year-old Rowan Blanchard to play the role of Cory and Topanga's daughter, Riley Matthews. Rowan has already appeared in movies like 'The Back-Up Plan' and 'Spy Kids: All The Time In The World 4D.' And now she's beat out thousands of kids in the nationwide search for her newest role.

Producer Michael Jacobs knew instantly how special Rowan was and said, "As soon as Rowan walked into the room, I was reminded of why Ben Savage was loved as Cory Matthews [in the original series]. Rowan is real and accessible and I am hopeful this girl is about to meet a world that will love growing up with her as well."

'Boy Meets World' was a popular 90's sitcom that followed the life of lovable boy-next-door Cory Matthews and his childhood friend turned crush turned girlfriend turned wife, Topanga.

'Girl Meets World' will pick up years later with Cory and Topanga playing supporting roles as their tween daughter Riley takes center stage. And Rowan's onscreen parents are just as excited as we are for her to land the role. Danielle Fishel (who plays Topanga) Tweeted, "Want to meet my and @BenSavage's daughter for Girl Meets World? Here she is: @rowanblanchard!! Congratulations beautiful girl! Can't wait!"

The pilot for 'Girl Meets World' will begin filming in February.

Becky-G-hotel-transylvania.jpg

Rapper Becky G is proving herself as a force to be reckoned within the music industry. Her quick raps have landed on tracks with Cody Simpson and Cher Lloyd, but she also sings and plays guitar. Most recently, the 15-year-old remixed her song "Problem" featuring will.i.am for Selena Gomez's flick 'Hotel Transylvania.' The duo took the song and created the "Monster Remix" for the animated movie, which is on DVD in stores now! We chatted with Becky about working with will.i.am and hearing her song on the big screen for the first time.

J-14: What made you decide to mix your song for 'Hotel Transylvania?'

Becky G:
There were no if, ands, or buts about remixing the song for the movie! I was on board the moment they told me the story line and the cast.

J-14: How did the collaboration with will.i.am. come together? What was your reaction when you found out you would be working with him and what was it like?

Becky: Will.i.am and Dr Luke were working in the same recording studios. Luke showed Will some of my music and Will and Luke agreed that us working together would be something very special. So, the very next day we got into the studio and made a song called "Problem." Not long after that, the opportunity with 'Hotel T' came along and Will and I were all about it, so in order to fit with the movie, we made the "Monster Problem Remix."

J-14: Do you have any fun memories from working with will.i.am in the studio?

Becky: The first time we ever got in the studio together, he made me try popcorn and ranch. Interesting, right? It was surprisingly really yummy!

J-14: What was it like to watch the movie and then hear your song?

Becky:
It was such a crazy feeling when the song started playing! I was so into the movie towards the end that I kind of forgot it was going to play and then BAM! I heard it and started blushing and holding screams in.

J-14: Give J-14 readers three reasons why they should go out and buy the DVD.

Becky: 1. The movie is simply amazing and funny. I can honestly say it's the perfect family movie.
2. There are awesome bonus features like scenes that weren't in the final cut of the movie.
3. Last but not least MY music video "Problem --The Monster remix" is part of the bonus features!

J-14 Exclusive: Bailee Madison Talks 'Parental Guidance'

Bailee-Madison-Parental-Guidance.jpg

Bailee Madison
may look familiar from her role as Maxine on 'Wizards of Waverly Place,' but she's moved on from witches and wizards to the big screen! Her latest role is Harper Simmons in the comedy 'Parental Guidance.' In the movie, Harper and her two younger brothers cause tons of hilarious problems for their grandparents who agree to babysit them while their parents are away. We caught up with the 13-year-old actress to talk all things 'Parental Guidance' -- in theaters now!

J-14: In 'Parental Guidance' you and your two brothers create havoc for your grandparents. What was the craziest thing that happened on set?

Bailee Madison:
While filming the rain scene, there were hot tubs for the cast to warm up in. Josh and Kyle, who play my brothers in the film, thought the hot tub was way cooler than filming in the freezing cold rain, because we were outside in 23-degree weather. There were so many bribes going on on-set to get the boys out of there. I think I owed them 20 chocolate bars by the end of the night!

J-14: Did you ever play any pranks on each other?

Bailee: More tricks than pranks. Joshua Rush, who plays Turner, was super slow when it came to changing out of his costume, so I decided to race him every night to see who could change, hang up their clothes, and get in the van the fastest. He absolutely loved it and little did he know it was so we could all get back to the hotel a lot sooner!

J-14: What was the hardest scene to film?

Bailee:
Those that had to do with me flirting with Cody, who's played by Mavrick Moreno. I've never done anything like that before, so it was super awkward, which in turn, made the scenes really awkward!

J-14: What did everyone do in between takes?

Bailee:
Bette and Billy were always singing and dancing in between takes. There was one time when Andy, our director yelled, "Action!" for one of the more dramatic scenes, and Bette and I were singing so loud that we didn't hear it! They had to scream it five more times until we heard them!

J-14: Give our readers three reasons they should go see 'Parental Guidance.'

Bailee:
1. It's the perfect film for the whole family.
2. You're going to laugh, cry and want to see it over and over again.
3. If you want to relate to a bunch of awkward teens/tweens, this is definitely
your movie!

J-14 Exclusive: Nicholas Hoult On 'Warm Bodies'& True Love

Nicholas-Hoult.jpg

Since getting his big break opposite Hugh Grant in 2002's 'About A Boy,' Nicholas Hoult has gone from precocious child star to undead leading man. J-14 caught up with the 23-year-old actor (who recently ended his two-year relationship with 'X Men: First Class' costar Jennifer Lawrence) for an exclusive chat about his turn as a lovable zombie named R in 'Warm Bodies' -- and his real-life tricks to winning a girl's heart.

'Warm Bodies' hits theaters this Friday, February 1.

J-14: What do you say to skeptics who think 'Warm Bodies' is just another 'Twilight'?

Nicholas Hoult: What sets 'Warm Bodies' apart majorly is that it takes itself quite lightly. It doesn't take itself too seriously like [some other films in the genre do]. It's entertaining and fun and also slightly scary at points. It's got a funny, twisted sense of humor about it. And I thought it was an interesting take to tell the story from a zombie's point of view.

J-14: Have you ever been super uncomfortable around a girl like R is when he first interacts with Julie?

Nicholas: I feel uncomfortable with anyone until I start to get to know them, and then I can relax a little bit. It's hard enough for us guys to be around girls anyway -- and particularly with a zombie who hasn't been around a girl for a long time. We don't know what to say or do, but R definitely has a very heightened version of that where he can't really talk as well, so he's trying to communicate through records or showing her things which is very tricky.

J-14: The zombies in 'Warm Bodies' definitely have some communication challenges. In your own life, have you struggled with being misunderstood?

Nicholas: It could potentially be a very English male trait where we find it very difficult to communicate our emotions, but I think that everyone at some point feels like they don't fit in. Connecting with people is one of the best things that happens in life. It happens very rarely, and it's something everyone's striving for.

J-14: In the film, R risks his life for Julie. What's the most romantic thing you've done for a girl?

Nicholas: Well romantic things, it's more like little surprises -- making a surprise meal or something like that. All the little things, like you stop and get them flowers on the way home or something, even though flowers usually mean you've done something wrong. Be careful with the flowers. Sometimes you'll get in trouble for buying flowers.

J-14: Which do you think you'd be more likely to survive -- a zombie apocalypse or the Hunger Games?

Nicholas: My chances are not good in either. I'm going to go with the zombie apocalypse because I could maybe blend in and pretend to be a zombie for a little bit and they wouldn't notice.

"It's almost like being a new artist and trying to make a first impression," Miley says. "I think the best thing I could have done was take those two years off to really live, because now people don't think of me as who I was on the TV show."

Over the past few months, Miley has been in the studio with Hit-Boy and Da Internz adding a bit of edge to her new music. She has also been working alongside top music producer Pharrell Williams.

"I really didn't want to make a hip-hop record, and I'm not trying at all to be a Rihanna or a Nicki [Minaj]....That's not my vibe," Miley says. "When I was growing up, my older brother would sneak me Nelly CDs, my dad had me listening to Dolly [Parton] and Johnny [Cash], and my mom is a complete metal head. So this record is a weird mixture of all that."
