Sibling-Duo-Brandon-and-Savannah-Talk-Music-Tour-One-Direction.jpg

With their hot new single 'All The Runaways' climbing up the charts, brother and sister duo Brandon and Savannah are singing their way to the top! The siblings, who are also huge fans of J-14 (they even had some of the J-14 stickers from the August 2012 issue on their iPhones!) stopped by recently to talk with us all about their new music, being on tour, and yes, what it's really like to meet One Direction!

J-14: Okay, tell us the truth: What's it like working with your sibling?
Savannah:
It's absolutely amazing. I wouldn't want to share my career with anyone else. If I don't know what to say, he'll finish my sentence, and while performing he always has my back.
Brandon: We're also compatible. We're brother and sister, so it's easy to write songs together, and perform together because it's natural. I just see her around the house and I'm like, "Let's rehearse or write a song." It's so easy!

J-14: 'All The Runaways' has become a huge hit! What was it like hearing your song on the radio for the first time?
Savannah:
It's always been our dream to have our song on the radio, so when we heard it on one of the biggest radio stations in L.A., it was so crazy and so surreal. I was like, "That's my voice! That's our song!"
Brandon: We have strong connections with our music because we write it, so when we heard it on the radio it was really crazy. Now it's being played more and more, and it's just really exciting. Every day it's more exciting!

J-14: And you guys were touring all over the place this summer! What was the best part?
Savannah:
Seeing how people react to our songs and getting to see people sing along with us.
Brandon: Not only that, but seeing different parts of the United States that we haven't seen before! We get to see states we've never been to.

Leon-Thomas-Talks-Touring-with-Big-Time-Rush-and-End-of-Victorious.jpg

Victorious may be heading into its final season, but for Leon Thomas III, the show was just the beginning! This talented singer has recorded covers with Ariana Grande and is now joining Big Time Rush on the final leg of their Big Time Summer Tour! We caught up with Leon to get the scoop on touring with the guys and what we can expect from the final episode of 'Victorious!'

J-14: What's been the best part of joining the Big Time Summer Tour so far?
Leon Thomas:
The best part of joining the Big Time Rush Tour is meeting all the new fans and getting an opportunity to show love on stage. It's also great to finally get a chance to hang out with the BTR guys.

J-14: What's your favorite song to perform live each night?
Leon Thomas:
My favorite song to perform live right now is 'Movin' On' -- it's so much fun to sing!

J-14: Any crazy moments on tour so far? Has Big Time Rush pranked you?
Leon Thomas:
So far I haven't seen any pranks, but I hear it's tour tradition to prank someone on the last show date, so we'll see!

Attention Mahomies! Austin Mahone's video for his newest single, 'Say Somethin' is finally here! We've been waiting for this day since those shirtless pics of Austin popped up while he was in Florida filming the video. (Unfortunately, that part didn't make the cut!)

But just in time for those of you who are starting school this week, the video also takes place on the first day of school. If only we could be so lucky to go to the same school as Austin!

Austin was recently signed to Chase Records/Universal Republic and will be on 'Live! with Kelly & Michael' on September 20 performing for the first time on TV... and he's following that up with his first J-14 InTune Concert at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square that night with Cher Lloyd!

Watch Austin Mahone's first official music video "Say Somethin" -- and leave a comment. You never know... you may be lucky and get a response from Austin himself!

J-14 Q&A: Demi Lovato & Simon Cowell Talk 'The X Factor' Season Two

Demi-Lovato-Simon-Cowell-Talk-The-X-Factor-Season-2.jpg

The two-part second season premiere of The X Factor begins tonight (and continues tomorrow) at 8pm on FOX! This season, judges Demi Lovato and Britney Spears join the table, along with L.A. Reid and Simon Cowell -- and we could not be more excited to see them! In honor of tonight's premiere, we caught up with Simon Cowell and Demi Lovato to get the inside scoop about what we can expect from this season! (The next One Direction, perhaps?)

J-14: Now that you've had to spend all this time together at auditions, it makes sense that all the judges have become friends -- but what were your first impressions of each other?
Simon Cowell:
My first recollection was Demi saying to me, "You're much better looking in real life."
Demi Lovato: Of course, of course. I totally said that.
Simon Cowell: I thought she was very confident, very bright -- then became quite annoying. But she knew what she was talking about.

J-14: Even though the first few audition episodes don't have a host, do you know who'll be hosting the show during the competition rounds?
Simon Cowell: We've screen-tested quite a few people. My gut feeling is we'll probably go with a boy and a girl who haven't had any hosting experience because I think that might make it more interesting.

J-14: Demi, what was it like working with a pop legend like Britney Spears? Were you star-struck at all?
Demi Lovato: L.A. and Britney are so amazing. I feel like they are doing just a great job, especially Britney. The world hasn't really gotten a chance to see her personality over the past couple of years and this is the perfect opportunity for people to really see the light inside of her shine. She's very witty and funny and quirky and I just have such a good time working with her.

J-14 Hot Music Alert: Tino Coury

Tino-Coury.jpg

J-14 is scouting out the hottest music around... and this week's pick is Tino Coury!

Here are five things you need to know about Tino Coury whose album This One's For is out this fall!

1. Though he's always had a love for music (he got his first guitar when he was in seventh grade!), 23-year-old Pittsburgh native Tino Coury was an athlete growing up, planning to go away to play college football. However, when he got injured his senior year and couldn't play anymore, he set up a studio in the basement of his house to focus on music. "There came a point in time where I said to myself 'do I want to go away to college and live that normal college life or stay close to home?'" Tino tells J-14. "I decided to stay close to home so I could commute and focus on music."

2. He found musical inspiration growing up through bands like Blink-182, Green Day, and The All-American Rejects. "I wanted to teach myself how to play so I would go online and look up chords and these bands were a huge inspiration, I wanted to make a CD just like them," he tells J-14.

3. Tino has had the opportunity to perform with many artists throughout the past few years including Pitbull, Chris Brown, Jason Derülo, and B.o.B. but his favorite was with Drake. "It was 13,000 people. Everyone was in to it because they played the record [Diary] a lot," Tino tells J-14. "My goal is to sell out an arena someday."

But we managed to catch up with Cody to talk about the YouTube flick, his summer tour, and what we can expect to hear on 'Paradise!'

Cody Simpson:
It's something different -- it's unique and fun. We put a lot of time and effort into this, and I know my fans will love it.

J-14: Where did the idea for an interactive YouTube movie come from?
Cody Simpson:
My record label came to me and said they wanted to shoot an interactive adventure movie that took place at one of my concerts, so we sat down with them and started brainstorming ideas!

Cody Simpson:
We are doing like ten or twelve shows in Europe -- like, England, France, and Germany. I've never been there before so we just wanted to go over and see the fans!

J-14 Exclusive Interview: Mae Whitman Talks 'Perks,' British Accents, & Logan Lerman

$

mae-whitman-perks-of-being-a-wallflower-interview.JPG

From 'One Fine Day' to 'Scott Pilgrim vs. the World' to 'Parenthood,' actress Mae Whitman is no stranger to the Hollywood spotlight. Now, she's starring in one of her most exciting roles yet as Mary Elizabeth in 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower,' in theaters September 21.

Mae took time to exclusively chat with J-14 about the flick, her painful boy drama, and what it's like to hang out with Emma Watson, Nina Dobrev, and Logan Lerman!

J-14: We're huge 'Perks' fans! Can you give us three reasons why our readers should check it out?

Mae: One, it takes place in the '90s, and the '90s are awesome. We had an incredible, incredible wardrobe designer who did the most amazing job with all of the costumes. Plus, all of the sets and the music are really '90s -- it's just a very cool era. Two, it is a perfect representation of those long summer nights in school and all those feelings of loving and having your own crushes and meeting your friends for the first time. Three, it's a beautiful love story with beautiful people that have huge hearts and that really love. There's some real magic in there, so I definitely would not let this film go by.

J-14: Your 'Perks' character, Mary Elizabeth, isn't afraid to stand out and do her own thing. Was that at all how you were in high school?

Mae Whitman: I definitely feel that I relate to Mary Elizabeth a lot about being a control freak, having strong opinions, being too bossy... These are all things I've been accused of before. I think it was beautiful to see ['Perks'] represent Mary Elizabeth in a way that you understand what a beautiful, incredible person she is. I love that so much, and I was so happy that someone could tell her story.

J-14: There's a devastating moment in the film where Mary Elizabeth faces intense heartbreak. Did you ever experience that sort of unrequited love?

Mae: I remember one boy in my class who was really popular, and everyone was like, 'He really likes you. He wants to date you.' And I was like, 'Great, today's the day! I'm going to get a big date!' And then he kind of took me aside and was like, 'Yeah, I don't really want to date you. I just think it'll be funny if we tell our friends we're dating.' It was terrible, but it was one of those things where -- like the moment with Mary Elizabeth and Charlie -- it's really about listening and being aware of what you want and need. In a big way, Mary Elizabeth is not a listener. She was not really aware of the fact that Charlie didn't even appreciate all of the wonderful things about her. That to me was, like, a big lesson there. It wasn't that Charlie was the biggest heartbreak of her life -- it was that, in a way, he just wasn't right for her. It was a lesson for her to start listening more.

J-14: Since Emma Watson is British, she had to really work on her American accent to play Sam. Did you and the other American actors help her at all?

Mae: There were certain things that were just hard [for her] to overcome and sometimes you get mental hang-ups and uncertain words right before shooting. She really had to work on the word 'go.' So we'd repeat [her lines] to her before takes like, 'Go there. Go there.' She might have been nervous about it, but she pretty much had it down from the beginning.

J-14: What's something fans would be surprised to learn about Nina Dobrev (who plays Candace) and Logan Lerman (Charlie)?

Mae: That's a great question. Nina is amazing. I didn't know her at all [before filming], and I barely had any scenes with her, but the time that we spent together was really great. I had some great girl time with Nina and Emma. We hung out, we traded clothes, we talked. Logan is an amazing musician, which I don't know if anyone knew. Same with Ezra [Miller]. We would all jam out and play piano. Logan is actually really great with writing music that's orchestral, like for a movie score. He writes these beautiful piano pieces. He sometimes just writes them for people that he meets and inspire him, so every once in a while he'll be like, 'Hey, I forgot. I wrote this when I first met you. Here!' And it's this beautiful little piano piece that is great to hold dear. He's a really sensitive and special individual.

J-14 Editor Blog: Best 2012 InTune Moments

Editor-Blog-Best-2012-InTune-Moments.jpg

J-14 rocked the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square last night at our 2012 InTune Concert featuring Cher Lloyd and Austin Mahone! It all started with a red carpet, where our InTune performers strutted their stuff -- and were joined by other stars, like Jordan Witzigreuter of The Ready Set, Thomas Fiss, Jack Skuller, Aaron Carter, and Alexa Ray Joel (J-14's Life's Big Questions columnist!). Tiffany Giardina kicked off the night and got the crowd going with her upbeat tracks before Jordan came onstage to introduce Austin! Austin rocked the house with covers of The Jonas Brothers' "When You Look Me In The Eyes" and, of course, brought everyone to their feet with his hit single "Say Somethin'!" Pop star Aaron Carter hit the stage next to introduce Cher Lloyd, who gave a killer performance, featuring her tracks "With Ur Love" and "Want U Back!" What a night!

The J-14 editors (pictured above with the performers!) can't stop talking about the show. Here are our favorite moments:

"It always gives me chills to see the J-14 Magazine logo on the big fancy marquee at the Hard Rock Cafe in the heart of New York City's Times Square! And this year we were so lucky to have so many special friends join us for the Cher Lloyd and Austin Mahone show -- Aaron Carter, Jack Skuller, Jordan Witzigreuter of The Ready Set, Alabama Capital, and Thomas Fiss! Especially loved having J-14's Life's Big Questions' guest editor Alexa Ray Joel join us -- not only did she wow the red carpet photographers, but she was so passionate when we chatted about her column and how much she loves helping out the readers! And of course loved hanging out with so many J-14 readers, especially Katie, Annie, Haley, Callie, and Anh!" -- Editor-in-Chief Rachel Chang

"I was a huge fan of Aaron Carter growing up, so I was beyond excited to see him at the J-14 InTune! Even though he's been famous from such a young age, Aaron couldn't have been more humble and sweet to every single fan that approached him. (He must've posed for hundreds of pictures last night!) And the best part? In between sets, Aaron and I even had the chance to chat for awhile, and he told me all about his new gig in the stage production of The Fantasticks in NYC! Such a sweet guy!" -- Editorial Associate Katie Amey

"My favorite part of the night definitely had to be chatting with N.B.T.'s Jack Skuller and InTune performer Austin Mahone. They're both so adorable, talented and friendly! As a performer Austin was so comfortable and full of energy on stage. He rocked the house performing "11:11," "Say Somethin'" and a few new tracks complete with some awesome dance moves. He even pulled a few fans on stage to serenade them with a heartfelt cover of the Jonas Brothers' "When You Look Me in the Eyes!"" -- Assistant Editor Laura Knipping

"My favorite moment from InTune was definitely when Cher Lloyd sang "Want U Back!" It was so fun to have everyone in the entire place singing along to such a catchy song. Bonus: You could tell Cher was having so much fun rockin' out! She also had the coolest spiky microphone!" -- Designer Tanya Swartz

"My favorite moments of the night were getting to hang out with singer-songwriter Thomas Fiss after he walked the red carpet and Jordan Witzigreuter of The Ready Set, who spent his day off at our InTune to introduce Austin Mahone to the crowd." -- Photo Assistant Nicole Mazza

Ever since the first time we heard the viral phenomenon "Gangnam Style" by Psy we haven't been able to get the catchy tune out of our heads -- and it looks like Cody Simpson can't either! He got together with some of his friends to shoot their own "Gangnam Style" video mouthing the words and doing the signature dance!

"The mindset of this dance is dress classy and dance cheesy," Psy says. It looks like Cody and his friends have both of those down pat!

Hey J-14ers!

I am so excited that everyone will finally be able to see Perks of Being a Wallflower -- the incredible new film that hits theaters today! 'Perks of Being a Wallflower' (or Perks, as it's known) is one of the best films I've seen this year. (And it also doesn't hurt that it's based off of the book of the same name, which is one of my favorite books of all time!)

Logan Lerman stars as Charlie, a sweet, sensitive high school freshman, who is just trying to navigate his way through the school hallways and make a few good friends along the way. Although shy, he soon meets the beautiful (and older!) Sam (Emma Watson), a high school senior who is looking to repair her bad image and really find someone that she connects with. (Of course, he can't help but fall in love with her!) Sam's gay brother Patrick (Ezra Miller) is, like Charlie, also having a tough time in high school, though he remains remarkably positive despite all the negativity he faces -- and ultimately helps Charlie realize what true love and friendship really means.

I think that this coming-of-age stories is one of the most important ones out there -- and the entire cast has done a fantastic job at translating it from book to screen. When I saw the early preview several months ago, I completely fell in love with Logan and Ezra as Charlie and Patrick and couldn't stop telling all of my friends (over and over and over) that they need to see it the second that it comes out!

So, now I'm going to say the same to you! If you want a film that will make you laugh hysterically, cry (but in the best way!), and also make you feel better about ever going against the grain or being different from your friends, this is the film for you. (And I'd also recommend checking out the book, Perks of Being A Wallflower, by Stephen Chbosky -- which we are giving away in a 'Perks' Prize Pack over on our prize page -- so check it out!)

Let me know what you think once you see it! And check out the trailer below:

xoxo
