J-14 Exclusive: Max Thieriot Talks 'The House at the End of the Street'

Max-Thieriot-house-at-the-end-of-the-street.jpg

Although he plays the mysterious guy next door in 'The House at the End of the Street,' when we caught up with Max Thieriot, he couldn't have been more charming! In the new thriller, Max plays Ryan who is left to live in his family's house by himself after his younger sister kills their parents and then disappears. Jennifer Lawrence plays Elissa who moves in next door and begins a relationship with the reclusive Ryan. Read on for more info about 'The House at the End of the Street' in theaters today, September 21!

J-14: What drew you to The House at the End of the Street?

Max:
It was really the script that brought me in. When I was done reading the script, I was honestly, legitimately shocked, and I didn't see the twists and turns and everything coming. Of course, the character of Ryan has so many different elements to him that made it challenging and fun as an actor to do.

J-14: What was your favorite part of filming?

Max: We all had a lot fun filming this movie. We became like a close-knit family. We spent a lot of time together. The experience of being up there [in Ottowa] and away from everything else you're used to and getting to know everybody well. It was a lot of fun.

J-14: What was the hardest part?

Max:
Probably just trying to come up with a character like Ryan who has all these different layers, but at the same time I wanted Ryan to be affectionate and compassionate, and I want people to care about him. That's difficult, because you want to make sure that it comes off right.

J-14: What was it like working with Jennifer Lawrence?

Max: Jen's awesome. She's really, really down to earth. She's from Kentucky, so she has this small town vibe to her. It's kind of like hanging out with one of the guys. She watches 'The Simpsons' and football and all those fun things that guys like to veg out on.

J-14: Give us three reasons why readers should go see 'The House at the End of the Street.'

Max:
I would say 1. You are going to be thoroughly entertained with the movie, 2. It is the most original film of this genre in a long time, and 3. It's definitely scary because it's all real stuff that could happen.

Dylan-Hyde.jpg

J-14 is scouting out the hottest music around... and this week's pick is Dylan Hyde!

Here are five things you need to know about Dylan Hyde who's currently working on his debut album. His single "Love Is" is out now!

1. Upcoming pop singer and musician Dylan Hyde has always been a huge fan of music. "I grew up in a musical family. We love karaoke and just enjoy great music," Dylan tells J-14. "I was also inspired by other artists, especially by Billy Joel. He's the
reason I learned to play the piano and love slow songs."

2. The best way Dylan describes himself is as a 'pop neo-crooner'. "I realize that I'm
not the crooner sound that people are use to but I'm not the pop sound being produced today either. So I like to think that I'm a new generation of crooners bringing a new pop sound that my fans across the world are going to love," he tells J-14.

3. Dylan is currently in the studio working on his debut album that is set for release early next year. "The album is filled with soul and pop influences. My producer Shawn Campbell describes it as an album for everyone to enjoy. There's something for everyone, early Michael Jackson influences, some John Legend, and even 60's and 90's influences," he tells J-14. "It's musically forward in a lot of ways. It's about love and heartbreak. It's music you want to sing at the top of your lungs!"

Carly-Rose-Sonenclar.jpg

Thirteen-year-old Carly Rose Sonenclar completely blew us away with her rendition of "Feelin' Good" on the first week of 'The X Factor' auditions. (She ended up receiving four big yes' from the judges to move on to the boot camp round). We recently caught up with her and she gave us the scoop on her audition and her ultimate goals.

J14: What made you choose to audition for 'The X Factor?'

Carly Rose: I was the right age [to audition]. I think that's what's cool about the show is they allow kids my age to do it. I think there's a lot of talent out there in my age group that a lot of these other shows don't really allow.

J14: Were you fans of any of the judges before you auditioned?
Carly Rose: Oh yeah, I was fans of all of them before. I used to sing to 'American Idol' and my brother used to pretend he was Simon, with the British accent and everything. So I was a fan of him since I was two. As soon as Demi was on the Disney channel I was a fan of her. Britney, I've known forever, I mean she is a legend. And L.A. has discovered some of the biggest people. So you kind of get something different from each judge. I think that's different from any show.

J14: Were you discouraged at all by their skeptical reactions to what song you were going to sing?

Carly Rose: I think I was a little nervous, you could probably see it on my face. I was like "Oh, God, why did they do that?" But I guess in the end it paid off.

J14: What's your ultimate goal?
Carly Rose: To be a household name, like Demi and Britney. But to bring the soulful element to the pop industry, because Top 40 music is taking over. And that's what this show is looking for, the next pop star. But I think bringing the soulful aspect to that pop aspect and putting them together could make something really different and cool. So that's what I want to do. And also writing my own music, because I write a lot of my own music.

Are you excited to watch Carly Rose Sonenclar in 'The X Factor' boot camp round?

The track is all about best friends and the music video shows Cher, along with some of her best gal pals, laughing it up at school and on the beach. So much fun! The song also features Becky G, who raps part of the lyrics (and who you may remember from Cody Simpson's "Wish U Were Here").

Midnight-Red-J14.jpg

J-14 is scouting out the hottest bands around... and this week's pick is Midnight Red!

Here are five things you need to know about Midnight Red who are currently working on their debut album!

1. Pop boy band Midnight Red consists of Colton Rudloff, Anthony Ladao, Thomas Augusto, Eric Secharia, and Joey Diggs Jr. Though they are all from individual backgrounds and upbringings, music was the one thing that bonded them all together. "All of us as children were the performers of our families. At the weddings we would dance at the weddings, sing at the weddings," Anthony tells J-14. "Definitely for me growing up music has always been a part of my life, with my grandfather being a musician and stuff like that."

2. Joey came up with their name after a dream he had. "We went through a numerous amount of names and they were either taken, copy written or just were corny. On my life, no joke, no nothing, I had a dream and somebody was like 'midnight, use it, it will work'. I woke up and was like I might as well just text everybody," Joey tells J-14. "So I sent everybody a text that said 'Guys I had a dream I know it sounds corny but how about Midnight?' We added Red to it and it just stuck and now we're Midnight Red."

3. Midnight Red are currently in the studio working on their debut album. "It's lively and fun spirited. It's young and rebellious and it makes you feel good," Thomas describes their sound.

Another Tuesday means another song release from Taylor Swift's upcoming album "Red!" This week brings us "I Knew You Were Trouble," a super catchy and upbeat breakup anthem that sounds like it could have been a Katy Perry song. The single describes a guy Taylor says she knew she should have steered clear of, but went for anyway.

"It's a song that's one of my favorite songs on the album because it sounds just as chaotic as the feeling was when I wrote it," she says. "It's a song about kind of being frustrated with yourself because you have your heart broken and you knew when you first saw that person you saw all these red flags and you just went for it anyway. So, shame on me."

Not only did Taylor release a new song, she also released the entire track list to the album. Take a look at the list below:

'The X Factor' competition is heating up! After narrowing 60 contestants down to 24, the judges enlist the help of some superstar guests -- including Justin Bieber and Nick Jonas! Justin helps out L.A. Reid during the "judges' houses" round, while Nick teams up with lifelong pal Demi Lovato.

"The reason why I picked Nick [as a guest judge] is because we grew up together," Demi says. "We've known each other since we were 14 and now we're 20 years old and we've continued to have successful careers. He's been all over the world, sold so many records, hit songs. I mean, he knows what he's talking about."

Nick was equally thrilled to be working with Demi again. "When I got the call from Demi to be the special guest in her house, I think my initial reaction was a little bit overwhelmed with the idea of having to sort of decide these six very talented peoples' fate," Nick says. "But I knew that Demi needed a friend, someone she was comfortable with. We've had a long relationship and working relationship together, so I was thrilled she gave me a call."

Kayla-Briana.jpg

Newcomer Kayla Brianna debuted her first single, "If You Love Me" at a Lakers/Heat game earlier this year and also opened for Mindless Behavior on their #1 Girl tour! While she was on tour, she came by the J-14 offices to give us the inside scoop on her music and what it's really like to tour with Mindless Behavior!

J-14: How did you get your start in music?

Kayla:
I actually started in musical theater which kind of led me into singing which led me to just being a solo artist. I was also in a few girl groups as well, and that kind of prepped me for where I am now. Our name was Bella Steez.

J-14: What is the most exciting thing you've gotten to do so far as an artist?

Kayla: I think this tour was kind of my big break. It was my first tour. A funny story is that I actually got attacked in Louisville outside of my tour bus. I never thought that would happen, but people were pulling my arms and my hair. They were happy to see me, but there was a lot of people around. I was kind of scared, but at the same time I was like, "They love me."

J-14: What is it like touring with Mindless Behavior?

Kayla Brianna:
It's really a lot of fun. A lot of people think they are silly and crazy, but at their hotel, they have slumber parties and pillow fights. We hang out a lot, and it's not just me. It's also Jacob Latimore who is on the tour as well, so we all just hang out collectively and talk or go to eat or go go-cart racing.

J-14: That sounds like fun! Which member are you closest with?

Kayla: Probably Princeton. He's the one with the big afro. He's really cool. They're all really cool, but me and him are really close. We relate the most.

J-14: What's next for you?

Kayla:
Shooting the video for the song "Bombs Away" that I have and just finishing up the album, and then I'm going to get into acting and things like that so I'm excited.

What do you think of Kayla Brianna?

J-14 Editor Blog: Meet America's Newest Boy Band -- Playback!

Playback-Boy-Band-The-X-Factor.jpg

Hi J-14ers!

Last year, I was lucky enough to mentor the cast of Majors & Minors and show them how to do their very first magazine interview. Every single contestant on the show was so unique and so talented that it was impossible to pick one over the other. But the moment then-15-year-old Josh Metzler from Gilbert, AZ, sat down for our interview, I just knew that I was talking to a superstar in the making.

WATCH IT: J-14 Magazine Mentors the Majors & Minors Cast

Josh was already a YouTube star, with tons of covers ranging from Plain White T's to Katy Perry on his YouTube channel azsinger62. Yet he was so modest and eager to learn from all the mentors on Majors & Minors -- from Avril Lavigne to Jordin Sparks!

So when I was sitting at home watching The X Factor a few weeks ago and saw them pan past a familiar face, I wasn't surprised that Josh had found his way in front of superstar judges Simon Cowell, Demi Lovato, Britney Spears, and L.A. Reid. In fact, the next day in the office, I said to the other J-14ers, "Simon should put him in a group along with Austin Corini and a few other guys, the same way he did with One Direction on The X Factor in the U.K."

Needless to say, my jaw dropped when that's exactly what happened last night on The X Factor.

Josh and Austin were indeed put in a group with Brandon Hassan, Johnny Maxwell, and Owen Stuart -- and soon boy band Playback was born!

In case you missed it, check out Playback's debut performance on The X Factor last night:

The boys have been hard at work getting to know each other and develop their sound. They've already filmed videos for Neon Trees' "Everybody Talks," Jason Mraz's "I Won't Give Up," and Justin Bieber's "As Long As You Love Me," -- and are preparing to take on The X Factor's next round!

Congrats again to Josh for being handpicked by Simon Cowell for Playback -- and we're rooting for you guys!

What did you guys think of Playback on The X Factor?

Can't wait to hear from you!
