Justin Bieber is a Distant Cousin of Avril Lavigne and Ryan Gosling!

JUSTIN-bieber-avil-ryan.jpg

Talk about great family genes! Ancestry.com has found that Canadian superstars Justin Bieber, singer Avril Lavigne, and actor Ryan Gosling are distant cousins! Justin is a 12th cousin to Avril and an 11th cousin once removed to Ryan. The link dates back all the way to 400 years ago when some of the earliest settlers came to Quebec. Their common relatives are Mathurin Roy and Marguerite Bire who were born in the early 1600s in France, got married in 1637, and moved to Quebec.

They also found that Justin is a 10th cousin three times removed to singer Celine Dion! However, they can't say that this confirms there's some type of "superstar gene" -- but we beg to differ!

Do you think that genes had anything to do with Justin Bieber, Avril Lavigne and Ryan Gosling's super-stardom?

J-14 Exclusive: Olivia Holt Talks 'Girl vs. Monster'

olivia-holt-girl-vs-monster.jpg

You may know her as Kim on Disney XD's 'Kickin' It,' but tonight, October 12, Olivia Holt stars in Disney channel original Halloween flick 'Girl vs. Monster' at 8 p.m. Before the movie premiered, Olivia took the time to chat with us about the movie and her goof friend Kat McNamara!

J-14: Tell us a little bit about 'Girl vs. Monster.'

Olivia:
'Girl vs. Monster' is basically about my character, Skylar Lewis, who finds out that she is a fifth-generation monster hunter on Halloween. She has these big plans for Halloween to go to this party to see the guy she likes, and her parents are making her stay home. She's just so irritated and so angry because she wants to go to this party. She wants to sneak out of the house, but it doesn't exactly go as planned. She accidentally releases all of the monsters her parents, her past, her ancestors have gotten over the years. It just turns into this big, hectic and chaotic Halloween night, and her and her friends kind of have to save Halloween. It's an awesome film, and I'm really pumped for everyone to see it.

J-14: What attracted you to the movie?

Olivia: When I first read the script, it was funny because I was so into it that I was crying. I was reading it, and I was like, "Oh my gosh. Am I really crying right now?" But when I read the script, it was amazing and I thought that the characters were so great, especially Skylar. I thought she was so powerful, and she really inspired me. I was like, "I love this character." It ended up working out, and I'm so thrilled to be able to play her and to be able to have this experience and this opportunity.

J-14: What was it like playing a monster hunter?

Olivia:
It was so cool because I'd never experienced playing a monster hunter before. I've always been kind of a regular teenage kid. My character Skylar finds out that she is a fifth generation monster hunter, and she kind of has to decide whether to accept the fact that this is her and her family and her past. It was really cool. I had such a great time. The action scenes were so much fun, and I totally enjoyed it.

J-14: Did you do most of your own stunts?

Olivia:
I did, and that was one of the really cool parts. I got to learn a whole bunch from that as well, and we had so fun with all of the cool stunts in the movie.

J-14: What was it like working alongside Kat McNamara?

Olivia: She's a sweetheart. She actually guest-starred on 'Kickin' It' which was really cool, and she's a really good friend of mine. It's really cool, because when I found out that she was going to be in the movie as well, she was at the set that time I found out, and I was so happy. I was jumping up and down with her, and it was awesome to spend two months in Vancouver with her as well. We've become really good friends. Sometimes we'll try to get all of the 'Girl vs. Monster' cast together like a little mini reunion. We'll go swimming, and I promise you, every time I hang out with the cast, we eat pizza which is our go-to food. It's funny.

Are you going to check out Olivia Holt in 'Girl vs. Monster?

Alabama-Capital-Into-You.jpg

J-14 is scouting out the hottest music around... and this week's pick is Alabama Capital!

Here are five things you need to know about Alabama Capital who are currently working on their debut album!

1. Cincinnati's 18-year-old twin duo Alabama Capital always knew they wanted to be singer-songwriters. "We've been playing music our whole lives. Our family is musical and we've grown up with music all around us. We've always kind of been jamming together but recently when we were sixteen we really got in to writing and playing together," Nathan tells J-14. "It's something we were born to do, because it's definitely built in. It's the passion that we have and we love doing it," Caleb adds.

2. Nathan and Caleb's last name is Montgomery, the capital of Alabama, which is how they decided on their duo name.

3. They best describe their sound as "very duo driven with lots of harmonies." "It's pop music, it's accessible, but it's real instrument driven," Nathan tells J-14. "We're singer-songwriters so we write a lot of our own music so it's authentic and true to us which is really important."

3. One artist they would love to collaborate with is singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. "That would be ridiculously awesome," Caleb tells J-14.

Meaghan-Martin.jpg

Actress Meaghan Martin has teamed up with Acuvue for the second year in a row as a host and a mentor for their 1-Day contest that encourages teens around the world to search for their dreams. We caught up with Meaghan who gave us the scoop on the contest and her best beauty tips!

J-14: Tell us about your involvement with the Acuvue 1-Day contest.

Meaghan:
I wear Acuvue contact lenses, so that was an easy first involvement, and then when they were explaining the contest to me, it seemed really cool to me, about helping kids get closer to their dreams. I was involved with the contest last year as a host and a mentor so they asked me to come back again this year to do both roles again. I was very excited.

J-14: Do you relate to the kids who enter the contest?

Meaghan: Absolutely because I think everyone has their dreams and what they want to achieve in life, and I've been lucky enough to have some success at what I want. I've had so many people helping me get to where I am, so it was great to be able to help these kids.

J-14: What's your best makeup advice for girls who wear glasses?

Meaghan: My best makeup advice would be to keep it simple around the eyes because you already have an accessory. You already have something highlighting your eyes, so you don't need a lot of eye shadow, eyeliner and mascara.

J-14: What is one of your secret beauty tips?

Meaghan: Neosporin actually. Neosporin is the greatest thing to ever happen to my life. Any blemishes, put it on, because it's an antibiotic cream so it kills the bacteria and you get less scarring. Overall it's a miracle ointment.

J-14: What's one of your favorite fashion trends?

Meaghan:
I love maxi dresses. I've become obsessed with them. They're so easy and comfortable, and you don't have to think too hard when you're wearing one.

The Jonas Brothers reunited to perform to a sold-out crowd at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on October 11 -- and debuted three of their brand new songs! But, one song in particular has been getting a ton of attention since Nick Jonas introduced it and performed it live: "Wedding Bells."

"You have to write a song and apologize for it later," Nick explained of the song during the concert. "I don't know that I've ever written a song that makes me as uncomfortable as this song does. Although it's not the way I feel at this moment at time, hopefully this will give you a glimpse into what that experience was like for me."

The song is rumored to be about ex-girlfriend Miley Cyrus and her engagement to Liam Hemsworth -- and there are some serious hints that it really is about Nick's famous ex! The lyrics talk of his reaction when an ex-girlfriend asked: "Can you keep a secret? The ceremony's set for June. I know it's a rush but I just love him so much. I hope that you can meet him soon." (Miley and Liam announced their engagement on June 6, 2012 -- and we still don't know when the wedding will be! Perhaps this upcoming June?)

In the second verse, Nick sings: "If you recall, our anniversary falls 11 nights into June." Many Niley fans know that in Miley's autobiography, Miles to Go, she talks about her relationship with Nick and specifies that she met her first love on June 11, 2006. Hmm...

Listen to Nick's speech and check out the song below:

Do you think the song is about Miley? What do you think of "Wedding Bells"?

"State of Grace" is already #1 on iTunes just above "I Knew You Were Trouble" and "WANEGBT" comes in at #9. If these hits are any indication of what the rest of "Red" will be like we can't wait to hear it!

J-14 Editor Blog: Dare to Read During Teen Read Week

teen-read-week.jpg

This week, Oct. 14-20, is Teen Read Week which aims to remind teens that reading is fun, free, and can be done anywhere, anytime. For the remainder of the week the J-14 Magazine staff challenges you to pick up a book -- just for fun! -- and fills you in on some of our all-time favorites.

"When I first read The Hunger Games, I couldn't get over how much it reminded me of Lois Lowry's The Giver. Fans of the dystopian Panem saga will love reading Lowry's classic tale of a boy who must decide whether to accept the life that's been chosen for him in a world of "sameness" or run away in search of something more. And if you want to get a head start on the 'next big thing,' check out my current obsession -- the 'Divergent' trilogy by Veronica Roth. Danger + love + girl power = You won't be able to put them down!" --Deputy Editor Ashley Spencer

"J.K. Rowling whisked me away into such an intriguing and detailed magical world in the Harry Potter series that I found myself stressing out about Yule Ball dance dates, bawling about characters unfairly killed off, and even fearing the evil He Who Must Not Be Named along with Harry, Hermione, and Ron throughout the seven books... to the point that I sometimes forgot they were just fictional characters!" --Editor-in-chief Rachel Chang

"My absolute favorite series is a tie between Sweet Valley High and The Babysitter's Club. Although the SVH books were a little before my time, my older cousin saved every single book in the series for me to read -- which I definitely did! (I was so much more of an Elizabeth Wakefield than a Jessica.) And as far as The Babysitter's Club? Does anyone even need to explain why they were obsessed with that series? I wanted to be as cool and stylish (and from New York!) as Stacey, as take-charge as Kristy, and have the cutest boyfriend, Logan, like Mary-Anne!" --Editorial Associate Katie Amey

"East of Eden by John Steinbeck. Usually, I think the stuff they make you read in school is kind of boring -- but not this book. I could read it over and over again!" --Designer Tanya Swartz

"I loved reading the Twilight series. Once I started I couldn't put them down, and read all 4 books in a row. I'm still secretly hoping for Bella and Jacob to get together. Team Jacob!" --Photo Editor Danielle Kepler

"I love a heart-tugging, tear-jerking novel, especially one that inspires you, educates you, and sometimes makes you remember how good you really have it! Jodi Picoult does all three of these things with her novels, but my ultimate favorite is My Sister's Keeper. If you liked the movie version (with Abigail Breslin and Cameron Diaz) you'll love the book. Get ready for a surprising ending that's way different than the movie!" --Assistant Editor Laura Knipping

Hey J-14ers!

The annual Z100 Jingle Ball at Madison Square Garden in New York City is known for bringing together tons of superstar acts for one night only, and every year, the J-14 editors LOVE trying to guess the lineup before it's announced. Earlier this month, the station revealed that The Wanted would take the stage this year -- along with blurry pics of the other eight acts on their website that we scurried to decipher.

In fact, we did such a good job of piecing together the photos, that we weren't too surprised when we hung out with The Wanted and they revealed the lineup at the official Z100 Jingle Ball Kick Off Party at Aéropostale in Times Square on October 19!

Looking cuter than ever as they took the stage to play some of their biggest hits like "Chasing The Sun" and "Glad You Came," The Wanted guys announced this year's insanely great acts. Brace yourselves -- it's mind-blowing:

Imagine-Dragons.jpg

J-14 is scouting out the hottest bands around... and this week's pick is Imagine Dragons!

Here are five things you need to know about indie-rock band Imagine Dragons who are currently on tour across the US!

1. Las Vegas' Imagine Dragons consists of frontman Dan Reynolds, guitarist Wayne Sermon, bassist Ben McKee, and drummer Daniel Platzman. After forming in 2008, they independently released three EPs before the release of their EP 'Continued Silence' and their latest record 'Night Vision'. "Our band wouldn't exist without Las Vegas," Dan says of their roots. "It's a great place for an artist to start out."

2. Imagine Dragons best describes their sound as rock and roll mixed with innovative backbeats, basslines, and percussion. "We like making raw natural noises and keeping them raw and natural but transforming them into synthetic noises," Wayne says.

3. Their debut full-length album is appropriately titled Night Visions. "Many of the songs on the album were written late into the night, and some of the lyrical themes came from dreams I've had, even some nightmares," Dan says. "So when the title Night Visions came up, it just seemed to fit perfectly. We hope it inspires other to create, and push through their own struggles."

Taylor Swift and Conor Kennedy Break Up

Taylor-Swift-Conor.jpg

This week is full of good news and bad for Taylor Swift. The good news is that her new album 'Red' debuted at number one on iTunes and is on track to sell more than 1 million copies in its first week. The bad news is that it seems her three-month romance with Conor Kennedy has reportedly come to an end.

Taylor was first spotted hanging out with Conor and his family at the Kennedys' compound in Hyannis Port, MA, in July. But as summer faded to fall, Conor had to return to his boarding school near Boston, while Taylor hit the road to promote 'Red.' In the end, it seems the distance was just too much for the couple to take and they quietly split.

"They quietly parted ways a while ago," a source says. "It was just a distance thing. No hard feelings. They're fine. It's been over a month since they've even seen each other. With her promotion for 'Red,' she has no time off until the end of the year."

Conor is rumored to be the inspiration for Taylor's new 'Red' tracks "Begin Again" and "Everything Has Changed," and she penned "Starlight" for his grandmother, Ethel Kennedy.

Are you sad Taylor Swift and Conor Kennedy broke up? What's your favorite track on 'Red'?

J-14 Exclusive: Jonny Weston Talks 'Chasing Mavericks,' Surfing, and Working with Gerard Butler

Jonny-Weston-chasing-mavericks.jpg

We recently sat down with newcomer -- and total hottie! -- Jonny Weston who stars in the upcoming surfer flick 'Chasing Mavericks' out October 26! The film is based on a true story and follows Jay Moriarity (Jonny) who enlists the help of a local surfing legend to train him to survive the mythic Mavericks surf break -- one of the biggest waves on Earth! Jonny, who taught himself to surf at just 12 years old, gave us the scoop on the movie and what it was like to work with Gerard Butler.

J14: Did you do any of your own stunts in the movie?

Jonny: I did most of my own stunts. I got professional training from some of the best surfers in the world. We really hammered down and I got a lot better really fast. Obviously the 60 foot waves are on the biggest days. I surfed Mavericks one day, but when it was 60 feet and pumping full-size, the guys who had been surfing that for twenty years were [the ones] out there.

J14: How are you similar to your character, Jay?

Jonny: Actually it's so funny because of Jay and how dangerous he was in the water and how fearless of it he was. He had this close call when he was a kid of almost drowning and I didn't realize that until his wife told me when we were already filming. That happened to me when I was three. I was standing on dry sand and a wave comes over my head and grabs me out and I completely was going to die. I had no way of getting out of the water and then all of the sudden I feel like 'boom.' My mom had grabbed my neck and was holding me above the water. It came back to me, that memory, when I was filming. I called my mom and was like 'Thank you, Mom! You're so good!'

J14: Did they know you could surf when they cast you?

Jonny:
They didn't know I could surf. I told them that I could, but I could have been lying. I was in the audition with Gerard Butler and everybody and I don't have the movie yet but I'm so excited to be there. I whip out my phone and I'm like 'I got this chick to record me surfing on this video. You have to watch this!' And they were like 'No thanks. Have a nice day.' I walked out of there so bummed. I was so sure that they didn't want me, but they hired me and found out I could surf later. It's cool because that means I was right for the character regardless.

J14: Do you think it was a lot different trying to capture someone who was a real person rather than a made up character?

Jonny: Hugely, yeah. It was just harder for me to understand that I'm not doing a documentary and that it's an actual film. I got over that and Gerard helped me a lot because he's played a real character [before] and it's a whole different type of thing. I had a lot of support and working with Gerard was unbelievable. He's such a powerful actor, he's such a good dude and such a good mentor. It was a really cool experience.

J14: What is the most exciting thing you've gotten to do as an actor?

Jonny: Ever, ever, ever is to play Jay Moriarity. The most important thing for me is the fact that I got represent someone as amazing of a person as Jay is. Despite the way that he grew up and despite the fact that he didn't have a father figure, he found his father figure and almost made him accept him. He was an incredibly different person and it was such an honor to read that part and know that I could do it and to get it. I felt responsible to get it, and I got it. Jay took everything bad in his life and turned it into the most powerful, productive thing and just pure love for people.

Are you going to check out Jonny Weston in 'Chasing Mavericks?'
