J-14 Hot Band Alert: Lawson

Lawson.jpg

J-14 is scouting out the hottest bands around... and this week's pick is Lawson.

Here are four things you need to know about Lawson who are currently on tour throughout the UK!

1. London based, pop-band Lawson consists of frontman and guitarist Andy Brown, guitarist Joel Peat, bassist Ryan Fletcher, and drummer Adam Pitts. Though they were first called The Grove, they realized it wasn't as fitting and decided to change their name to Lawson, which was the name of the surgeon who operated on Andy Brown when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of 18.

2. Though they haven't released any music in the US just yet, Lawson just came back from a trip to America, where they played several sold out shows. "It was incredible. This wasn't the first time we've been, but we still weren't expecting the reception we got in New York and Toronto in Canada," Andy says. "It's amazing considering we haven't released a single over there yet."

3. The title of their debut album 'Chapman Square', which was released last fall in the UK, has a personal meaning to the boys of Lawson. "The name means so much to us, it's where we really came together as a band," Adam says. "We all used to crash at Andy's place on Chapman Square when we first came to London."

4. Their third single is a track off of 'Chapman Square' called "Standing In The Dark". "Andy and I wrote it whilst staying in a mate's flat which was overlooking the O2 Arena a couple of years ago," Ryan says, "and getting the chance to perform it there earlier this year was a definite highlight for us as a band."

Check out their music video for their single "Standing In The Dark" and let us know what you think!

J-14 Exclusive: 4Count Talks Music and Nick Cannon

4-Count-J14.jpg

J-14 recently sat down with the boys of 4Count -- Adam Ackerman, Kieran Ackerman, Aaron Scott, and Ben Robinson. They're signed under Nick Cannon's music label 'Ncredible and they're on their way to becoming the next big thing. They're boys and they're in a band, but whatever you do, don't call them a boy band! "We call ourselves a guy group because it sounds a little more mature," Aaron says. "We're older."

J-14: How was the band started, and how did you come up with the name?

Adam: [Kieran] and I are brothers. We were background dancers for Nick [Cannon]'s group School Gyrls and they remembered us when they were starting up the guy group. We met with Nick and he told us all the plans for 4Count and we were super excited -- it was just the two of us at the time. We had an audition to find these two [Aaron and Ben]. Nick came up with the name.

J-14: What's it like working with Nick?

Aaron: Working with Nick is a huge honor for us. He's a mentor. He can kick back and hang out with us in his sweat suit, but also he just works so hard. It's good to watch him.

J-14: When did you know that you wanted to be singers?

Ben: My first time really experiencing singing in front of people was on a cruise ship. There was a girl I liked on the cruise. I knew I could dance, so I was like maybe if I dance and sing it might work. I did "The Way You Make Me Feel" by Michael Jackson and it turns out I did really good!

J-14: How would you describe your sound?

Ben: We do hip-hop and R&B. But we all like different types of music!

J-14: There's obviously a lot of boy bands these days like One Direction and The
Wanted. What makes you different?

Aaron: We like their music and we respect their grind. We're trying to create a culture where you can like more than one group. There are different genres of music, different styles. You listen to different types of music, you might as well like different bands.

Have you checked out 4Count yet? What do you think of their music?

J-14 Flick Pick: 'Jack the Giant Slayer'

Jack-The-Giant-Slayer.jpg

Hi J-14 readers!

We were lucky to be able to see an advanced screening of the movie 'Jack the Giant Slayer' before it's released in theaters this Friday, March 1! Read on to see what we thought of the movie.

In my opinion,'Jack the Giant Slayer' is a must-see! It's not exactly the fairy tale you remember as a kid, although the movie does stick to the original tale. The story we know and love was beautifully woven together with new details, action, and adventures -- with not just one beanstalk, but six! Nicholas Hoult stars as Jack and Eleanor Tomlinson as the new character Princess Isabelle, and the two share an instant connection after Jack saves Isabelle in the village. I also thought it was amazing that director Bryan Singer didn't make dim-witted giants, they were actually intellectual beings who sought revenge on the people below.

This movie is perfect for anyone who likes action, comedy, and a little romance; and hello Nicholas Hoult is in this movie, that should be enough of a reason to see it! I recommend it to all our J-14 readers!

See you at the movies!

--

Despite 'Jack the Giant Slayer's commitment to the classic fairy tale, it still had fresh action and new characters that can only be brought to life to its full capacity on the big screen. Nicholas Hoult brought refreshing youth and warmth to his leading role as Jack while Eleanor Tomlinson thrived taking on the role of Princess Isabelle.

What I especially loved about Princess Isabelle was that while she did (obviously) need rescuing, she was just as strong and brave as any of the other characters. Isabelle and Jack were a team, both taking turns at being the hero at different parts throughout the movie. The movie stayed true to the time period the original fairy tale was set in, but Isabelle's mind was light years ahead of her time. Eleanor captured that balance perfectly.

'Jack the Giant Slayer' is a movie I would recommend to any of my friends and a movie I recommend to all of you! It's action-packed, innovative, and highly entertaining. There's not much else you can ask for in a movie! Plus, Nicholas Hoult is in it. Isn't that enough reason in itself to head to the theaters? I think so.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

J-14 Exclusive: Nicholas Hoult Talks 'Jack the Giant Slayer'

Nicholas-Hoult-Jack-the-Giant-Slayer.jpg

2013 is turning out to be a huge year for Nicholas Hoult. Shortly following the February 2013 release of the zombie rom-com 'Warm Bodies,' Nicholas has returned to the big screen to win his way back into our hearts in 'Jack the Giant Slayer.' Coming to theaters today, March 1, the movie takes a stab at the classic fairytale, 'Jack and the Beanstalk,' and takes viewers on a fresh, new adventure. Nicholas takes the lead as Jack in climbing the beanstalk to rescue Princess Isabelle played by Eleanor Tomlinson. We were so excited to get a chance to talk to Nicholas about everything from twists on the classic story to his own dreamland above a magical beanstalk.

J-14: How did you prepare for the role of Jack?

Nicholas Hoult: I did some climbing for a bit. They built massive chunks of beanstalks in the film studios and I had to do a lot of climbing. Often when I was being pegged by water pellets, the passage could become quite tricky, so there was a bit of climbing training. Apart from that, it was going over the script and working on that. Before we actually started printing and photography, we did a week of motion capture stuff where they give the giants' performance. So we kind of had to ease into the shooting with that and we could get a grip on what the film was about.

J-14: What are some new elements that are brought to this classic old tale?

Nicholas: The thing that I really enjoyed about the script is, even though it's based on the fairytale, it's been developed into its own story. In the original story, they have one giant. In this story, there's lots of giants. Fee, Fye, Foe, and Fum are all kind of generals within the army of giant ranks and they've all got individual personalities and characters. It's going to be very different from what people have seen before and have real character.

J-14: Have you ever done anything romantic for a girl, like your character does for the princess?

Nicholas: It's quite extreme what he does. I don't think I've ever had an opportunity to do anything quite to that scale. Obviously, if anything like that could happen in my everyday life, then I'd do my best.

J-14: If you had access to a magical beanstalk like Jack, what would you hope to find at the top?

Nicholas: I'd like the island to be made out of marshmallows. I think, if it looked like the island they created here, but less dangerous and more edible, I think that would be a pretty good place to start.

J-14: You play Jack now, but if you could play another fairytale character, who would it be and why?

Nicholas: I'd like to play the dragon. You know the dragon that defends the castle that Sleeping Beauty falls asleep in? I'd like to play that, but if it's got to be a human character, I don't know. A bad guy. Or a wizard.

How excited are you to see Nicholas Hoult in 'Jack the Giant Slayer?'

J-14 Exclusive: Billy Unger Talks 'The Lost Medallion: The Adventures of Billy Stone'

Billy-Unger-The-Lost-Medallion.jpg

When Billy Unger isn't fighting ninjas on Disney XD's 'Lab Rats,' he's searching for a medallion for his father in 'The Lost Medallion: The Adventures of Billy Stone.' The 17-year-old actor plays Billy Stone in the action flick slated to hit theaters, today, March 1. We got a chance to talk to Billy about how important the film is to him, doing his own stunts, and of course, 'Lab Rats!'

J-14: How did you get involved in 'The Lost Medallion?'

Billy Unger: It all starts with the first audition. I remember I actually sought this one out. I read about it somewhere that they were auditioning for this role. They had a little breakdown description of the character and I was like, 'Wow, I really feel like I could do something with this.' I went in there one day, did my audition, and they were just loving the energy. I was sitting there just talking to Bill Muir, who is our director/producer/writer, about how in love with this character I was and he was really digging my vibe. He was like, 'I have not seen another kid walk into this audition room that has the energy that you do,' so I felt really good walking away from that. Of course, though, it never comes easy. I did like six other callbacks on top of that, but every time that I went in there, I felt pretty confident. I felt like I had already booked the role. I was just then proving it again and again that I was Billy Stone.

J-14: What does this movie mean to you?

Billy: I sought it out for the reason that this was an action film and I love action films, but then I fell in love with it even more so once I read the script. I saw that it wasn't just about the action as much as it was about the story that came along with it. This movie will make you laugh, make you cry, and make you cringe when the bad guys are this close to snatching up Billy and Allie. I felt like that's what a movie should be. A movie should take you on a roller coaster ride and it should make you feel a certain way. It should bring out emotions in you and when I read the script, that's exactly what it did to me. I thought if we can make this movie and if this film is half as good as the script is, then we could really have something here. That's why I fell in love with the movie.

J-14: How are you similar or different to your character, Billy Stone?

Billy: We're pretty similar. We're both super adventurous, we're both risk takers, and we love adrenaline. You see that in the film long before the medallion takes him and Allie back in time. You see that he's a risk taker because he jumps off a waterfall with a palm frond, thinking it'll keep him afloat and clearly, it won't. Although Billy Stone is really smart, it's kind of like he's the brute strength, he's sort of the muscle, the protector, and Allie's all brains. The two of them make a perfect team.

J-14: Did you do any of your own stunts?

Billy: I actually did all of my own stunts. I can recall one little stunt that they wouldn't let me do on a dirt bike and it didn't even make it into the film. So all that you see in the movie was done by yours truly. I wanted it to be that way.

J-14: Is there anything else besides 'The Lost Medallion' coming up for you want readers to know about?

Billy: The number one thing that I could say, other than 'The Lost Medallion,' to look out for is season two of 'Lab Rats.' We've got some really fantastic episodes. We've got a ton of new plots and characters that are going to be revealed. A lot of the questions that were asked in season one are going to be answered. We're pulling out all the stops. We want to make everything bigger, better, and crazier. Just trust me, it's going to be a huge deal. We've got a few hour-long episodes because a half hour just isn't long enough. Plenty of new tricks, toys, jokes, laughter, and action.

Will you be hitting the theaters to see Billy Unger in 'The Lost Medallion?'
